How to Banish Baggy Eyes

Under-eye bags and puffiness are a natural part of the aging process due to the loss of skin firmness and muscle, and decrease in circulation around the eye area. Consuming more high-salt foods or alcoholic beverages, especially during the holidays, can often make things worse.

Here we’ll share how the natural aging process as well as various lifestyle factors can cause eyes to look tired, along with our best tips and tricks to keep eyes looking tight and bright all season long.

What Causes Eyes to Look Tired?

The eyes are the first area to show signs of aging. This is because the  skin around our eyes is extremely thin and delicate, with fewer sebaceous glands and collagen and elastin fibers than any other area of the body. Sebum, collagen and elastin are responsible for skin hydration, elasticity, and density. As a result, when natural oil, collagen and elastin production decreases - and microcirculation slows down year on year - the result is thinner, drier, saggier eye skin. As the skin below the eyes starts to loosen, blood vessels under the skin may become more visible resulting in dark circles.

Various lifestyle behaviors, such as consuming foods high in salt, too many alcoholic beverages, and lack of sleep can worsen the condition. Too much sodium disrupts the sodium balance in our cells and causes our body to retain water, causing bloating and excess puffiness. Alcohol dehydrates the body by acting as a diuretic making you lose water through your urine. Dehydration causes skin to become weak and saggy; but alcohol also has an inflammatory effect on your body which can cause swelling. We also know eating and drinking too much, night sweats, hot flashes or even anxiety and stress around the holidays can cause our sleep to be interrupted which is another huge cause of dark circles, hanging eyelids and bagginess.

3 Tips to Tighten & Brighten Puffy Eyes

Add More Balance to Your Bevvies

We know it’s hard not to indulge during the holidays. You’ve worked hard all year and nothing feels better than attending multiple seasonal soirees to celebrate this magical time of year with good food, good company and a few festive cocktails. But if you want to avoid next morning eyebags and puffiness, we recommend drinking a full glass of spring water in-between cocktails to stay hydrated. Or, explore different mocktails in lieu of alcoholic beverages which have become super popular this year. At Pause, we are huge tequila fans, but every now and then we’ll substitute a Virgin Margarita into the rotation:

2 ounces lime juice
1 ounce lemon or grapefruit juice
1 ounce orange juice
Club soda to taste
Lime wheels to garnish
(optional) If you prefer a bit of a sweeter option, add Manuka Honey to Step 1 to taste

Pour the lemon, lime and orange or grapefruit juice into a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Cover and shake vigorously for 15 seconds. Pour into a rimmed glass. Add club soda and garnish with a lime wheel.

Improve Your Sleeping Habits

There are so many different factors that can cause us to lose sleep, especially during menopause when anxiety, hot flashes or night sweats can keep us up. We recommend keeping a Pause Cooling Mist next to your bed to stop night sweats in their tracks. It’s been clinically proven to provide an instant cooling effect that lasts up to an hour. It not only helps evaporate sweat, it also contains Holy Basil, which is a known stress reliever.  Also, sleeping on pillows where your face and chest are slightly elevated will help prevent fluids from building up around your eyes while you sleep. And make sure to apply a good eye cream, preferable one that contains caffeine and Vitamin C to help nourish delicate eye skin while encouraging microcirculation.

Try Some Cr-EYE-otherapy

If you wake up with eye bags or puffiness, the combination of our chilled stainless steel Fascia Tool and the depuffing ingredients in our Eye Renewal Treatment like Caffeine, Gingko Biloba and Arnica Flower Extract are all you need to refresh tired eyes. Chill your Fascia Stimulating Tool in the refrigerator. Dispense one pump of our Pause Eye Renewal Treatment. Using your ring finger, gently tap small dots of the Eye Cream under eyes from inner to outer corner about 1’2” from the lash line. Pat the cream gently into the skin. Apply the chilled Fascia Tool directly under your eye area as long as desired. Don’t forget to clean your Fascia Tool by rinsing it under warm water. If desired, use antibacterial soap or wipe down with rubbing alcohol.
